An XY stage or XYZ stage is defined as a device that provides high precision positioning along 2 perpendicular axes of motion or 3 perpendicular axes of motion respectively.
A gantry stage is a type of XY or XYZ stage in which two parallel linear stages comprise the X-axis and straddle the working area, supporting either end of the linear stage that comprises the Y-axis. Some or all axes may be motorized.
